From the artist: Hyperbolic geometry is radical, subversive, non-Euclidean geometry. I came to work hyperbolically through a lineage of feminist mathematicians, specifically Margaret Wertheim and also Daina Taimina, who discovered that you could accurately model hyperbolic geometry through crochet. It is my belief that viewing, and especially constructing, hyperbolic built forms triggers a nascent sense-awareness of hyperbolic structures present and active in the human body.

I often describe my practice as “structural framing with hand tools”, which is accurate, but most succinctly it is “accessible building”. This hyperbolic weaving of titanium wire is subversive as architecture, in its unconventional engagement of mechanical forces and definition of structure and strength as an open, responsive, and systemic event. Most buildings are big heavy things that direct their tremendous mass in a more or less vertical path to the ground. Their materiality upon completion is utterly dominating! Conventional building is encoded with embodied systemic inequalities, and I am out to subvert that. In the words of Audre Lorde, “For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.”
