Chaw Ei Thein
VOICES from who were not allowed to speak, 2023
Acrylic, fabric paint, camo fabric
60 x 60 in
152.4 x 152.4 cm
Thein draws from the rich and multilingual vernacular of Burmese protest posters in this monumental hand-painted work. Despite the military junta’s relentless crackdowns on public dissent and street demonstrations, in-person and online protests continue. Previously, Thein explored how civilians use public space in Myanmar — and how the regime interprets almost any public action as potentially political — in a series of performances on the streets of Yangon, including the collaborative piece Mobile Market / Mobile Gallery.
