Chaw Ei Thein
What a wonderful Japan when NO war, 2016
Japanese acrylic paint, camo fabric from Japanese self-defense army
20 1/2 x 21 1/2 in
52.1 x 54.6 cm
During a residency at Art Initiative Tokyo in 2016, Thein studied local flora and painted intricate designs on a handkerchief printed with Japanese camouflage. Japan renounced its right to declare war in the aftermath of World War II, but maintains the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (Jieitai). The sizeable armed force is a controversial subject among Japan’s largely pacifistic civilian population.
