Chaw Ei Thein
Wanted #2, 2023
Lipstick, mirror, bullet shell, wooden board, frame
12 x 12 x 12 in
30.5 x 30.5 x 30.5 cm
Lipstick is slang for bullet casings among Burmese revolutionaries. Thein combines both objects in this installation, continuing her long-running exploration of the way almost any object can carry a political charge in a despotic environment. It’s a phenomenon that political theorist Elliott Prasse-Freeman has called “politics of the daily,” an alternative form of political opposition that invites regular people to take action by hiding political symbolism in plain sight.
