“Villains are not one-dimensional characters whose motives or actions diametrically oppose those of heroes. Villains are often complex, not fully understood, characters, which makes them easy scapegoats for the presence or perpetuation of social evils or difficulties.”
—Valerie Rangel
Heroes | Villains is papercut artist Valerie Rangel's exploration of moral ambiguity and the perceived dichotomy between good and evil. In this exhibition, Rangel uses the unique qualities of the papel picado craft, such as cast shadows, to challenge the accepted narratives of popularly villainized characters from fiction and history such as Edward Scissorhands and Cesar Chavez.
