A new exhibition bringing attention to forgotten women found in early photographs will debut this weekend. Massachusetts-based artist Jodi Colella creates embroideries on top of photos of women from 19th-century daguerreotype portraits from a museum archive. While the photos of men all came with abundant personal information, almost all of the women were unknown. In a show aiming to draw a comparison between women’s current social status with how they have been remembered in historical settings, Colella’s embroideries “further obscures their identities.”
